Cliff's Story: The Cat Who Came Home
Some stories stay with you forever.
For us, that story belongs to Cliff.
A handsome orange-and-white boy, Cliff lived with his equally beautiful sister, Molly, and their devoted mum, Sarah*.
Sarah first contacted us in early 2025 after relocating from the south of England to Liverpool. She had only just bought a new home and was due to travel away for work shortly after moving in. Naturally, she was worried about leaving her two indoor cats so soon after such a huge life change.
She explained that Cliff and Molly were incredibly affectionate cats who had spent their lives indoors. Moving house is one of the biggest upheavals a cat can experience, and they would only have a few days to settle into their new surroundings before we were due to begin caring for them.
We reassured her that we'd take things slowly and help them adjust at their own pace.
Then, just two days before our first visit, my phone buzzed.
It was the kind of message no pet sitter ever wants to receive.
Cliff had escaped.
Only hours after arriving at his new home, somehow he'd managed to get outside—and vanished without a trace.
Sarah and her partner were heartbroken. Their work trip couldn't be cancelled, and they were facing the unimaginable prospect of leaving Liverpool while their beloved cat was missing in a place he'd never known before.
By the time we met the family, emotions were understandably running high.
As soon as Sarah and her partner left, we made ourselves a promise.
We weren't just going to care for Molly.
We were going to help bring Cliff home.
Every spare moment we had was spent searching. We designed and distributed leaflets with Cliff's photograph, knocked on neighbours' doors, spoke to local shop owners, checked gardens and asked permission to search sheds, garages and anywhere a frightened cat might hide.
Day after day, there was nothing.
Anyone who has lived with cats knows that they are creatures of routine and territory. When an indoor cat suddenly finds themselves outside in an unfamiliar environment, they rarely wander far. Instead, they often hide silently in the smallest, darkest spaces they can find, waiting until they feel completely safe before emerging. Fear can keep them hidden for days—or even weeks.
With that in mind, I decided to buy a wildlife camera and position it overlooking the back garden, setting it to send alerts directly to my phone whenever movement was detected.
Every notification made my heart race.
Sometimes it was four o'clock in the morning.
Every time my phone buzzed, I hoped it would be Cliff.
Instead, it was almost always the same visitor.
A neighbourhood cat.
Night after night, this cat appeared at Cliff's back door. At first, it felt frustrating. But after seeing the same pattern over and over again, something clicked.
Cats communicate through scent as much as they do through body language. This visiting cat wasn't just wandering through the garden—it appeared to be claiming the territory.
If another cat was repeatedly patrolling Cliff's garden...
...perhaps Cliff hadn't gone far at all.
Perhaps he was simply too frightened to come home.
Convinced we were missing something, I returned to the house outside of our scheduled visits and searched the garden all over again.
Nothing.
I left feeling defeated.
Then, just as I was driving away, another camera alert appeared on my phone.
There he was.
For just a few seconds, Cliff cautiously emerged from beneath a brick-built structure beneath the back doorstep before disappearing again.
He'd been there the entire time.
He wasn't lost.
He'd simply been waiting until he believed it was safe, and when we came by again and looked outside, he felt this was the perfect time.
I ran faster than I ever have before.
My heart was pounding as I carefully approached the spot. Sure enough, tucked away beneath the brickwork under the backdoor, was one very dusty, very hungry, but thankfully very alive Cliff.
The moment I lifted him into my arms, he melted into the cuddliest cat you could ever wish to meet and begged me to take him indoor, with all of this captured on camera, including myself, in floods of tears from happiness.
We took him inside, offered him food, water and the comfort of his familiar surroundings before making the phone call every owner dreams of receiving.
"We've found him."
I'll never forget hearing the relief in Sarah's* voice.
After everything he'd been through, Cliff settled back into home life beautifully. Today, he continues to enjoy life indoors with his much less adventurous sister, Molly, where he belongs.
Cliff reminded us that missing cats aren't always far away.
Sometimes they're simply waiting for the world to feel safe again.
And sometimes, finding them takes more than luck.
It takes patience, understanding, and refusing to give up.
